Raising two small children with type 1 diabetes
Wednesday, November 11, 2015 - 14:07
If you or someone you care for has suffered from a severe hypoglycaemic event, you’ll realise that being able to monitor glucose levels 24/7 through CGM is a potential lifesaver. That’s why we’re supporting subsidised CGM to be approved by the Federal Government and asking people to share their #SmartGuard® story.
For an insight into courage, parenthood and life without CGM, read Toni’s #SmartGuard® story:
This letter is to support the subsidisation of CGM. (Continuous Glucose Monitoring). I have 2 children with type 1 diabetes and without CGM life is a little harder than it should be. It costs about $70 per week on average for consumables plus cost of device (in the hundreds at last check) which only lasts life of battery installed.
Due to our situation I am a stay at home mum and this cost is out of our reach. Last year I went over my budget a dozen times to get my son on CGM. I had ordered new pump, met with reps, went to meetings and finally agreed that I had to do this for his health. 2 weeks before it was to arrive my daughter was diagnosed type 1. Needless to say it went out the window, because how do you choose between your children??? Who gets to wear it? $140 per week just to monitor sugar levels is ludicrous.
I have used the CGM in the past but had to stop because of the cost.
Imagine setting your alarm EVERY night for 3am to get up and test sugar levels……….
Imagine testing and finding your child is having a severe hypo whilst asleep…………….
Imagine trying to wake your own child that is basically is a coma state and trying to give them food and drink……………
Imagine trying to wake them for a WHOLE minute and they are floppy and not responding…………..
Imagine the FRIGHT…
Imagine the PANIC…
Imagine the GRIEF…
Imagine the GUILT…
Imagine the ANGER…
Imagine MY TEARS…. (yes, I’m crying just writing this)
Imagine knowing that this could be avoided with a CGM
This product works, it’s for our kids and if I could sleep more than 3 hours at a time my health would improve too. (An additional benefit for my kids and our health system.)
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
